The authors claim Europe is centered in “renewed great power competition and the resurgence of global authoritarianism”, and that “Migration, the rise of extreme nationalism, Brexit, and fractured ties with the United States all increasingly make European countries more vulnerable to Russian and Chinese authoritarian influence” (Taussig and Brandt, 2019).
